Albania has gone from overlooked to oversubscribed in a few summers. The coast fills up, the mountains are spectacular, and the roaming situation surprises people who assume "Europe" means one thing.
The roaming trap
Albania is not in the EU roaming zone. An EU SIM that worked at domestic rates in Greece or Italy can start charging out-of-bundle rates the moment you cross the border — and the Greek and Montenegrin land crossings are exactly where people find out.

The networks
Vodafone Albania and One Albania cover the country. 4G is good along the coast, in Tirana and on the main roads; 5G is appearing in Tirana.

- Tirana — good, with 5G in parts
- Albanian Riviera (Sarandë, Himarë, Dhërmi, Ksamil) — good in the towns, thinner on the cliff road between them
- Berat and Gjirokastër — fine in the old towns
- Theth and Valbona — the famous hike between them crosses genuinely unserved terrain; the villages have patchy coverage
- Lake Koman ferry — mostly offline, and stunning
- SH20 to Theth — improved but still thin

Practical notes
- Install your Albania eSIM before you fly or drive in. Tirana airport is small and the transfer options are best arranged in advance.
- Download offline maps of the north before you head to Theth or Valbona.
- Cash matters outside Tirana; card acceptance is improving but uneven.
- Summer beach bookings go through WhatsApp and Instagram, not booking sites.
- Driving is the best way to see the country and the mountain roads are slow — double whatever the map says.
