Bulgaria is an EU member with some of the fastest and cheapest fixed and mobile internet in Europe. For visitors it is an easy country to be connected in, with a few mountain caveats.
The networks
A1, Yettel and Vivacom cover the country. 4G is essentially universal in inhabited areas and 5G is broad in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas.
Coverage picture:
- Sofia and Plovdiv — excellent, including the metro
- Black Sea coast (Varna, Burgas, Sunny Beach, Sozopol) — very good, and busy in summer
- Rila and Pirin mountains — valley and resort coverage; the high trails and the Seven Rila Lakes area are patchy
- Rhodopes — town coverage, gaps on the back roads
- Ski resorts (Bansko, Borovets, Pamporovo) — good in the resorts, variable on the upper runs
- Rural interior — generally fine along main roads
EU roaming applies — if you are an EU subscriber
Bulgaria is in the EU roaming zone, so an EU or EEA SIM works at domestic rates subject to your operator's fair-use allowance. If you are coming from outside the zone — the UK, the US, Australia, Asia — that does not help you, and a travel eSIM is the cheap route.

Practical notes
