Do You Get 5G With a Travel eSIM? What Actually Determines Your Speed
Whether you get 5G abroad depends on four things, not one. Here is what controls your speed on a travel eSIM — and whether 5G is worth paying extra for.
5G is heavily marketed and inconsistently delivered. Here is what actually decides the speed you get on a travel eSIM.
Short answer: yes, travel eSIMs can deliver 5G — but only when all four of these line up: your phone supports 5G, the local partner network has 5G coverage where you stand, your plan includes 5G access, and the roaming agreement covers it. The four requirements
1. Your device. iPhone 12+, Galaxy S20+, Pixel 5+ and similar. Older phones cap at 4G regardless of plan.
2. Local coverage. 5G rollout is wildly uneven. It is dense in South Korea, Singapore, the UAE and Qatar; patchy in much of rural Europe and the Americas; largely absent in parts of Africa and South Asia.
3. Your plan. Some cheaper travel plans are 4G-only by design. Check the listing.
4. The roaming agreement. A partner network may offer 5G to its own customers but only 4G to roaming visitors. This one is invisible until you are there.
Do you actually need 5G while travelling?
Honestly, usually not. Typical travel usage — maps, messaging, social, ride apps, translation — runs perfectly on 4G, which delivers 10–50 Mbps in most places. 5G matters if you:
- hotspot a laptop for real work,
- upload large video daily,
- run long video calls from your phone.
For everything else, 4G LTE is indistinguishable in practice.
Why 5G can drain your plan faster
