eSIMs for Families and Groups: Keep Everyone Connected Abroad

Getting one phone online abroad is easy. Getting a whole family or a group of friends connected — without a stack of roaming bills — takes a little planning. Here is how to keep everyone reachable on a trip, whether that is two parents and three kids or six friends splitting an Airbnb.

Two approaches: a plan each, or share a hotspot

There are two sensible strategies, and many families mix them:

• An eSIM on each phone. Everyone has their own data, stays reachable independently, and no one is stranded if the group splits up. Best for teens, and for anyone who wanders off solo.

Keeping kids reachable

• Give each child's phone its own eSIM so they can message you even if separated from the group.
• Keep their home number active (dual-SIM) so your family group chat and calls still work on the number you already know.
• Share live locations in Find My or Google Maps — trivial once everyone has data.
• Set up Low Data Mode on kids' phones so games and apps do not silently drain the plan.

How much data does a group need?

Size per person by how they travel, then add up:

• Kids/tablets (games downloaded on Wi-Fi, some maps/chat): 2–3 GB each per week.
• Adults (maps, social, photos, coordination): 5–8 GB each per week.
• The hotspot host (sharing to 2–3 devices): size up to 15–20 GB.

Set up before you fly

1. Buy an eSIM per phone (or one larger plan to share) for your destination.
2. Install each one at home on Wi-Fi — the install guide makes it quick, and you can do all the phones in one sitting.
3. Label each eSIM clearly ("Mum Travel", "Leo Travel") so they are easy to manage.
4. On landing, switch each eSIM on and enable data roaming for that line.
