Can You Use a Travel eSIM on an iPad or Tablet? (2026 Guide)
Cellular iPads and Android tablets can run travel eSIMs — here is which models work, how to set one up, and when tethering from your phone is the smarter choice.
Tablets make excellent travel devices — bigger maps, easier reading, real work on the road. And yes, most cellular models take a travel eSIM.
Short answer: any Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad from the 2018 models onward supports eSIM, as do many cellular Android tablets (Galaxy Tab S-series and others). Wi-Fi-only tablets cannot — for those, tether from your phone instead.
Which tablets support eSIM?
- iPad Pro (3rd gen, 2018 and later), iPad Air (3rd gen and later), iPad (7th gen and later), iPad mini (5th gen and later) — all in Wi-Fi + Cellular trim
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S cellular models (S6 and newer), plus some Lenovo and Huawei cellular tablets
- Not supported: any Wi-Fi-only tablet — there is no cellular modem to activate
Check under Settings → Cellular Data → Add eSIM (iPad) or Settings → Connections → SIM manager (Android).
Setting up an eSIM on an iPad
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Settings → Cellular Data → Add eSIM → Use QR Code.
- Scan your provider's code (or enter details manually).
- Enable Data Roaming for the line when you arrive abroad.

Tablet eSIM vs tethering from your phone
Two valid approaches:
- A separate eSIM on the tablet — independent connection, no battery drain on your phone, works when you leave the phone behind. Costs a second plan.
- Hotspot from your phone's eSIM — one plan, no extra cost, but drains the phone and requires both devices together. See our tethering guide.
Rule of thumb: occasional tablet use → tether. Tablet as your main work device → give it its own plan and size it up.
What about laptops?
Some recent Windows laptops (Surface Pro, ThinkPad X1) have eSIM modems and take a travel plan the same way. Most laptops do not — tether from your phone instead.
The bottom line
If your tablet has a cellular modem, a travel eSIM works exactly as it does on a phone. If it does not, your phone's hotspot covers it. Browse plans for 190+ destinations and pick whichever fits your trip.
