South Pacific eSIM Guide: Fiji, French Polynesia, Samoa and Vanuatu
The South Pacific is the hardest region in the world to cover with one plan, and the easiest to overbuy for. Here is what works island by island and how much data you actually need.
The South Pacific spans a third of the planet's surface and holds a few million people. That ratio explains everything about connectivity out here.
Every island group is a separate country
Fiji — the regional hub, with the best coverage. Good on Viti Levu and the Mamanucas, patchy in the northern Yasawas. See the Fiji guide.
French Polynesia — Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora are well covered; the Tuamotus and Marquesas are not. Not covered by France plans. See the French Polynesia guide.
Samoa — Vodafone and Digicel cover Upolu and Savai'i's main roads.
Vanuatu — Vodafone and Digicel cover Port Vila and Luganville; the outer islands are thin.
New Caledonia — French territory with good coverage around Nouméa; again, usually not on a France plan.
Solomon Islands, Tonga, Kiribati, Tuvalu — capital coverage, and very little beyond.
The regional-plan problem
There is no equivalent here of a Europe or Southeast Asia plan that neatly covers the region. Pacific island coverage varies enormously between providers, and several nations are missing from most plans entirely.
Practical approach:
- Check each island nation on your route by name. Do not infer from "Oceania" or "Pacific".
- Buy country plans for the one or two you will actually spend time in.
- Accept offline time for the rest — it is part of the appeal.

This is a low-consumption region. Buying a large plan for a Pacific holiday is one of the most common ways to waste money on travel data.
Practical notes
- Inter-island flights and ferries run to their own schedules and change for weather. Transfer days are when you want data.
- Cyclone season (November to April) is the main reason to stay reachable.
- Resort Wi-Fi is often satellite — usable for messaging, not for uploads.
- Cash in villages and markets.
- Sunday is genuinely quiet across much of the region; plan around it.
- Distances are deceptive. Fiji to Tahiti is a five-hour flight.

Is there a plan covering the whole South Pacific? Rarely, and never comprehensively. Check names individually.
Do France or EU plans cover French Polynesia and New Caledonia? Usually not. Check the list.
Will my resort have Wi-Fi? Almost certainly, and it will be slower than you expect.
Should I buy data at all for a switch-off honeymoon? A small plan for transfer days and flight changes is worth it. A big one is not.
