Baltic States eSIM Guide: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are three separate countries that most visitors treat as one trip — Tallinn to Riga to Vilnius is a comfortable week by bus. All three are in the EU, all three are exceptionally well connected, and all three are cheap.

Coverage

Estonia — Telia, Elisa and Tele2. Estonia is one of the most digitally advanced countries in the world and the coverage reflects it: strong 4G and 5G, including on the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.

Latvia — LMT, Tele2 and Bite. Excellent in Riga and along the main roads, good on the coast at Jurmala, thinner in the Gauja forests.

Lithuania — Telia, Bite and Tele2. Very good in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda; the Curonian Spit is covered along its length.

Across all three, dead spots are rare and mostly forest or bog. This is one of the easiest regions in Europe to be connected in.

One plan, three countries

All three are EU members, so:

  • EU/EEA subscribers are covered by "Roam Like at Home" subject to fair use — see EU roaming rules in 2026.
  • Everyone else should buy a regional Europe plan rather than three country plans, since the border crossings are frequent and quick.

If you are continuing to Poland or Finland, those are EU too. If you are heading to Kaliningrad or east, that is a different matter entirely.

How much data

TripSuggested data
One capital, long weekend2 GB
All three capitals, one week3–5 GB
Two weeks with the coast and countryside8 GB

The Baltics are Wi-Fi-saturated. Estonia in particular has free public Wi-Fi in an extraordinary number of places. You will use less than you plan for.

Practical notes

  • Buses between the capitals are comfortable, cheap and have Wi-Fi. They are booked online.
  • Estonia's e-services are impressive but mostly for residents; as a visitor you are a normal tourist.
  • Old towns are compact and walkable — Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius are all small centres.
  • Winter is dark and cold. Battery life drops noticeably; the Christmas markets are worth it anyway.
  • Currency is the euro in all three.
  • The Curonian Spit crosses into Russian territory halfway down — do not drive past the border unless you mean to.

Baltic eSIM FAQ

Do I need three plans? No. A regional Europe plan covers all three; so does an EU SIM under roaming rules.

Is data expensive? No — the Baltics are among the cheapest in Europe, both for locals and visitors.

Does it work on the islands? Yes, Saaremaa and Hiiumaa are well covered.

Is Wi-Fi really that good? In Estonia, yes. Do not over-buy data.

The bottom line

Three countries, one plan, and less data than you think. Buy a regional Europe plan, install before you fly, and spend the savings in Riga's central market.
