East Africa Safari eSIM: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda
A safari itinerary crosses borders, national parks and long transfer drives, and your phone behaves differently in each. Here is how to plan data across East Africa without buying four plans.
East Africa is one of the few regions where a genuinely useful regional plan exists, because the countries share a tourism circuit and travellers routinely do two or three in one trip.
Coverage by country
Kenya — Safaricom's coverage is exceptional by any standard, including in much of the Maasai Mara. Airtel and Telkom compete. Nairobi has excellent 4G and 5G.
Tanzania — Vodacom, Airtel and Halotel cover the cities and much of the northern safari circuit. The Serengeti has coverage near lodges and gate areas, not across the plains. Zanzibar is well covered.
Uganda — MTN and Airtel cover Kampala, Entebbe and the main roads. Bwindi and the gorilla-trekking areas have lodge coverage and nothing on the trails.
Rwanda — the best-connected of the four relative to its size. MTN and Airtel give good coverage in Kigali and along the excellent road network; Volcanoes National Park has lodge coverage.
What actually goes offline
- Game drives — coverage comes and goes; lodges are the reliable points
- Gorilla and chimp trekking — no signal, several hours, steep forest
- Serengeti and Ngorongoro crossings — long stretches with nothing
- Kilimanjaro — surprisingly, some routes have signal high up; do not count on it
- Lake Victoria islands and remote camps — variable

The East African Community has its own cross-border roaming arrangements for local subscribers, but as a visitor what matters is your plan's country list.

Safari days use less than you expect — you are in a vehicle looking outwards, and lodges have Wi-Fi in the evening. Photo backup is the main consumer; do it on lodge Wi-Fi.
Practical notes
- M-Pesa and mobile money dominate locally but need local numbers; visitors use cash and cards.
- Lodge Wi-Fi is often satellite and slow. Set expectations for uploads.
- Charging in tented camps is limited to generator hours. A power bank is essential.
- Download offline maps for the parks and the transfer routes.
- Yellow fever certificates and visas are often checked at borders — keep them downloaded and printed.
- Dust is hard on lenses and ports.

Will I have signal in the Maasai Mara? In much of it, yes — Safaricom's reach there surprises people. In the Serengeti, less so.
Does one plan cover Kenya and Tanzania? A regional plan usually does; a country plan does not. Check before the border.
Can I work from a safari lodge? Marginally. Kigali and Nairobi are fine; lodges are not.
What about Zanzibar? Covered as part of Tanzania, and coverage is good in Stone Town and the beach areas.
The bottom line
East Africa is a strong case for a regional plan because the classic itineraries cross borders. Install before you fly, back up photos on lodge Wi-Fi rather than mobile data, and treat trekking days as fully offline.
