Data-Only eSIM Explained: How to Call and Text Abroad Without a Number

Most travel eSIMs are data-only — no local phone number. Here is what that means in practice, how to still make calls and send texts abroad, and when you actually need a number.

A common worry before buying a travel eSIM: "If it is data-only, how do I make calls?" It sounds like a limitation, but for modern travel it rarely is. Here is exactly how data-only works — and how you will call, text and stay reachable without a local number.

What "data-only" actually means

Most travel eSIMs give you mobile data, not a new phone number. You get fast internet for maps, apps and the web — but no local digits to hand out and no traditional voice/SMS plan on that line. For the vast majority of travelers, that is all they need, because almost everything runs over data now.

How you still call and text

With data, you have every messaging and calling tool you already use:

  • WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram, Messenger — calls and texts over your eSIM data, worldwide, free.
  • FaceTime, Zoom, Google Meet — video and voice calls over data.
  • Your home number still works. On a dual-SIM phone, keep your normal SIM active for calls and texts on your usual number while the eSIM carries data. Enable Wi-Fi calling and those work over any connection.

In practice you call home on WhatsApp or FaceTime, and your bank still reaches your real number for OTP codes.

Keep your home number for the important stuff

The key setup: do not remove your home SIM — just stop it using data abroad. On a dual-SIM phone:

  1. Keep your physical SIM active (for calls/texts on your number).
  2. Set the travel eSIM as your data line.
  3. Turn data roaming off on your home line so it cannot rack up charges.

Now your bank OTPs and the occasional real call still arrive, while all your data runs cheaply through the eSIM. More on this in our keep-your-number guide.

When you actually need a local number

Data-only covers ~95% of travelers. You might want a local number if:

  • An app or bank only accepts a local number for verification (some delivery and payment apps).
  • You need to receive local SMS from a business or service on the ground.

In those cases, a physical local SIM or a plan that includes a number makes sense. Otherwise, data-only is simpler, cheaper and keeps your identity on your own number.

The bottom line

"Data-only" is not a downgrade — it is how modern travel works. You call and text over apps, keep your home number for codes, and pay a flat local price for fast data. For nearly every trip, that is exactly what you want. Browse plans for 190+ destinations and stay reachable your way.

Reality check: with WhatsApp, FaceTime and Wi-Fi calling, a data-only eSIM lets you call and text everyone — no local number required.
