eSIM vs Roaming: The Real Cost Comparison (With Numbers)

How much does roaming actually cost versus a travel eSIM? Worked examples for a weekend, a two-week holiday and a month abroad.

People sense roaming is expensive but rarely do the arithmetic. Here it is, with the numbers that decide it.

Short answer: typical international roaming runs $10–15 per day; a travel eSIM is usually $5–25 for the whole trip. Break-even arrives on roughly day one. The longer the trip, the more absurd the gap.

What roaming actually costs

Most carriers price international roaming one of two ways:

  • Daily pass: a flat $10–15 per day you use data abroad. Convenient, and brutal over two weeks.
  • Pay-per-megabyte: legacy pricing, occasionally still the default outside bundles. This is where four-figure horror stories come from.

EU residents travelling inside the EU are largely protected by "roam like home" — but that stops at the bloc's edge, which catches people out in Switzerland, the UK and Norway.

Three worked examples

A long weekend (3 days)

  • Roaming daily pass: 3 × $12 = $36
  • Travel eSIM (1–3 GB): around $5–8

A two-week holiday (14 days)

  • Roaming daily pass: 14 × $12 = $168
  • Travel eSIM (10 GB): around $15–25

A month abroad (30 days)

  • Roaming daily pass: 30 × $12 = $360
  • Travel eSIM (20 GB or regional plan): around $30–45

Even at the cheapest end of roaming and the priciest end of eSIM, the eSIM wins from the first full day.

The costs people forget

  • Roaming applies per device. Two phones on a daily pass doubles it. Two eSIMs usually do not.
  • Background data counts. A phone left on roaming can trigger a daily pass without you actively using it — which is why we recommend turning home-line data roaming OFF (dual SIM setup).
  • Airport SIMs are cheap per GB but cost you queue time, passport details and your home number.

When roaming is genuinely the better choice

Rare, but real:

  • A one-night trip where $12 beats the hassle of any setup.
  • Your carrier includes the country free in your existing plan — check before assuming.
  • Your phone is locked or pre-2018, so an eSIM is not an option.

The bottom line

For any trip longer than a day, a travel eSIM costs a fraction of roaming and removes the bill-shock risk entirely. Browse plans for 190+ destinations and check the price before you fly instead of after.

The arithmetic: roaming is priced per day, eSIMs per trip. That is the whole story.
