Finland pairs a hyper-connected south with genuine wilderness up north. A travel eSIM covers the first properly and helps you plan sensibly for the second.

Short answer: 3–5 GB covers a week in Finland. Coverage is excellent in Helsinki and southern Finland and surprisingly good in Lapland's towns; wilderness areas and fells drop out. Finland is in the EU roaming zone.

Coverage across Finland

A travel eSIM rides Elisa, Telia or DNA. Finland has excellent network density for its size — Helsinki, Tampere, Turku and Rovaniemi are all strong, and even Lapland's towns are well served. Fell hiking areas and remote lakes are the gaps.

How much data do you need?

  • Helsinki city break: 1–3 GB.
  • A week including Lapland: 5 GB.
  • Aurora photography trip with uploads: 8 GB+.

Apps to download before you land

  • HSL for Helsinki transport.
  • VR Matkalla for trains, including the overnight to Rovaniemi.
  • Foreca or the FMI app — aurora and weather forecasts.
  • Google Maps offline for Lapland routes.

Set up before you fly

  1. Buy a Finland eSIM sized to your trip.
  2. Install it at home — see the install guide.
  3. Land, enable the eSIM and turn on Data Roaming.

Finland eSIM FAQ

Will I have signal for aurora hunting? In and around Lapland towns usually yes; out on the fells, plan for none.

Does extreme cold affect my phone? Badly — expect batteries to drain fast. Keep the phone warm and carry a power bank.

How much data for a week? 3–5 GB, more if you upload aurora photos nightly.

Is Finland in EU roaming? Yes.

The bottom line

Finland is easy in the south and wild in the north. Install a Finland eSIM before you fly and cache maps for Lapland.

EU roaming note: this country is in the EU/EEA roaming zone, so an EU home plan usually covers you under "roam like home". Everyone else should use an eSIM rather than pay international roaming.
