French Polynesia eSIM Guide 2026: Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora

French Polynesia eSIM Guide 2026: Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora

French Polynesia is 118 islands scattered over five archipelagos. The Society Islands, where almost every visitor goes, are well covered. Beyond them, it gets remote fast.

The networks

Vini (the incumbent) and Vodafone (Viti) cover the inhabited islands. 4G is good on Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea and Huahine.

Coverage picture:

  • Tahiti (Papeete) — good, with 4G throughout
  • Moorea — good around the coast road
  • Bora Bora — good on the main island and at most resorts on the motu
  • Raiatea, Taha'a, Huahine — good in the villages
  • Tuamotu atolls (Rangiroa, Fakarava, Tikehau) — village coverage, thinner at remote pensions
  • Marquesas and Austral islands — town coverage only, genuinely remote otherwise
  • Lagoon excursions and dive boats — offline once you are out

Overwater bungalow Wi-Fi

Worth setting expectations. Luxury resorts here have Wi-Fi, but it is frequently satellite-backed, shared across the property, and noticeably slower than the price suggests. It is fine for messaging and email; it is not a work connection.

If you need reliable connectivity — for work, or to upload photos as you go — your own data is often better than the resort's.

How much data

TripSuggested data
Honeymoon week, mostly disconnected1–3 GB
Two weeks island hopping5 GB
Working remotely10 GB+
Dive trip3 GB

Practical notes

  • Install your French Polynesia eSIM before you fly. It is a very long flight and Papeete arrivals are often in the middle of the night.
  • Inter-island flights and ferries are the way to move, and schedules change.
  • This is French territory but a separate roaming destination — a France plan does not normally cover it, and neither do most EU plans. Check the country list by name.
  • Cash in Pacific francs for markets and roulottes.
  • Everything is expensive. Data is one of the few things you can control.
  • Continuing to Fiji or the Cook Islands? Separate plans — see the South Pacific guide.

French Polynesia eSIM FAQ

Does my France or EU plan cover it? Usually not. French overseas collectivities are typically separate. Check the list.

Is resort Wi-Fi enough? For a switch-off honeymoon, yes. For anything time-sensitive, no.

Does it work on Bora Bora's motu resorts? Generally yes, though the far side of the lagoon can be weaker.

What about the Tuamotus? Village coverage is real; remote pensions and dive sites are not.

The bottom line

The Society Islands are well covered and the resort Wi-Fi is slower than you would expect. Install a French Polynesia eSIM before you fly, check it is not lumped in with a France plan, and buy small if you intend to actually switch off.
