Most trips to Armenia start in Yerevan and continue to Lake Sevan, Dilijan or Gyumri, or south to monasteries such as Tatev, about 250 km from the capital. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Armenia plans from $1.99, with a fixed amount of data or unlimited, all data only, with no call minutes, SMS or local phone number.
GB plans suit most trips, since maps, ride apps and messaging take little data, and run on Viva. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, and run on Ucom and Viva. Each plan card shows whether it is listed as 4G or 5G; on a 5G plan, expect 4G, with 5G where available. UK travel advice suggests the GG taxi app over street taxis.
Armenia has three mobile networks: Viva, the former VivaCell-MTS, renamed after MTS sold it in early 2024; Ucom; and Team, the former Beeline Armenia. Our plans run on Viva and Ucom, and a plan card that says Vivacell or VivaCell-MTS means Viva; Team is not on our plans. Viva says its network reaches 99.8% of the population. 5G is available in Yerevan and is spreading to regional towns such as Gyumri, Vanadzor and Dilijan.
Zvartnots International (EVN), Armenia's busiest airport, is 15 km west of Yerevan, and Gyumri Shirak (LWN), the second largest, lies 7 km from central Gyumri. After landing, switch on the eSIM line, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. Armenia is outside the EU's Roam Like at Home area, so keep your home SIM's data roaming off, even if it is from Germany.
The land borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey are closed. UK travel advice advises against all travel within 5 km of the entire eastern border with Azerbaijan and on the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan, so check your route against it. It also warns of poor roads, particularly from November to February. We have no coverage data for the gorges around Tatev and Noravank, so download offline maps first.
