The Eastern Alps cover 62% of landlocked Austria, which borders eight countries, from Germany to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Austria plans from $1.49: fixed GB, unlimited data and a data + calls option, on 3, A1 and Magenta.
GB plans suit most city breaks and rail trips, since maps, tickets and messaging take little data. Each plan card shows whether it is listed as 4G or 5G; on a 5G plan, expect 4G, with 5G where available. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, and the data + calls option adds call minutes. GB and unlimited plans are data only, and no plan includes a local phone number.
Austria has three mobile networks: A1, the former Mobilkom Austria; Magenta Telekom, called T-Mobile Austria until 2019; and Drei, run by Hutchison Drei Austria. Our plans run on 3, A1 and Magenta; a plan card that says A1.net means A1, and one that says 3 means Drei. Only about a third of Austria lies below 500 m, so we cannot promise signal on every slope: download offline maps before hikes and ski days.
Austria has been in the EU since 1995, so an EU or EEA SIM uses its domestic allowance here under Roam Like at Home; operators may still apply a fair-use limit to roaming data on cheap or unlimited tariffs. Switzerland is outside the zone, and in Vorarlberg's Rhine valley its network has been reported to reach about 10 km into Austria; see EU roaming rules explained.
Vienna Airport (VIE), the country's largest, lies in Schwechat, 18 km southeast of central Vienna. Salzburg Airport (SZG) is about 3 km from the city centre and only 2 km from the German border, and Innsbruck Airport (INN) about 4 km from central Innsbruck. After landing, switch on the eSIM line, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.
Tip: before a mountain day, save Austria's Alpine rescue number, 140, and the European emergency number, 112: Austria's government says both are free from any phone in the country. Near a border, if your phone shows a German or Swiss network, choose the network named on your plan card by hand.
