Belgium lies between the North Sea, the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France, with the forested Ardennes uplands in the southeast. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Belgium plans from $1.49: fixed GB, unlimited data and a data + calls option, on Proximus, Orange and BASE.
GB plans suit most city breaks in Brussels, Bruges or Ghent, since maps, tickets and messaging take little data. Each plan card shows whether it is listed as 4G or 5G; on a 5G plan, expect 4G, with 5G where available. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, and the data + calls option adds call minutes. GB and unlimited plans are data only, and no plan includes a local phone number.
Belgium has four mobile networks: Proximus, formerly Belgacom Mobile; Orange Belgium, which traded as Mobistar until 2016; BASE, owned by Telenet; and Digi, the newest, which launched in December 2024. Our plans run on Proximus, Orange and BASE; Digi is not on our plans. In June 2022 the regulator BIPT auctioned spectrum including the new 5G bands, 700 MHz and 3600 MHz, and all five bidders won a share.
Belgium has been in the EU since 1958, so an EU or EEA SIM uses its domestic allowance here under Roam Like at Home; operators may still apply a fair-use limit to roaming data on cheap or unlimited tariffs. All four neighbours are in the EU too, so the same applies on day trips. A UK, Swiss or US SIM is outside the zone and pays its operator's roaming rates; see EU roaming rules explained.
Brussels Airport (BRU), Belgium's main international airport, is in Zaventem, about 12 km northeast of Brussels, with a railway station below the terminal. Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL), the second busiest, is in Gosselies, 46 km south of Brussels, with shuttle buses to Brussels-Midi station. After landing, switch on the eSIM line, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.
Tip: near the borders, and in Baarle-Hertog, whose 22 Belgian exclaves lie inside the Netherlands, check which network your phone shows. A Belgium plan works in Belgium only, so if it shows a foreign network, choose the network named on your plan card by hand.
