Data Roaming: The One Setting Everyone Gets Wrong With a Travel eSIM
Half of all "my eSIM does not work" reports come down to a single toggle — and half of all surprise roaming bills come from having it on for the wrong line. Here is exactly how to set it, on both platforms.
Data roaming is a per-line setting, and that fact is the source of two opposite and equally common problems.
Problem one: roaming is off for your travel eSIM, so it never connects, and you conclude the eSIM is broken.
Problem two: roaming is on for your home SIM, so it quietly connects abroad at your carrier's roaming rate, and you get a bill.
The fix for both is the same five-minute settings pass.
Why a travel eSIM needs roaming on
A travel eSIM is issued by one operator and used on another operator's network in the destination country. Technically, that is roaming — even though it is what you bought the plan for and there is no extra charge.
Your phone does not know the difference between "roaming I paid for" and "roaming that costs €12 a megabyte". It just sees a foreign network and obeys the toggle.
The correct configuration
Two lines, two different settings:

iPhone, step by step
- Settings → Mobile Data (called Cellular in the US).
- Under SIMs, tap your travel plan.
- Turn On This Line — on.
- Data Roaming — on.
- Go back. Tap Mobile Data at the top of the SIMs section and select the travel plan as your data line.
- Tap your home SIM, and set Data Roaming — off.
- Optional: turn Allow Mobile Data Switching off, so your phone cannot fall back to the home line for data.
You can rename lines (tap the line → Mobile Plan Label) to something like "Travel" and "Home" so you never tap the wrong one.
Android, step by step
Menu names vary slightly by manufacturer, but the structure is the same:
- Settings → Network & internet → SIMs (Samsung: Connections → SIM manager).
- Select the travel eSIM.
- Turn the line on.
- Roaming — on.
- Back out, and set Mobile data to the travel eSIM.
- Select the home SIM and turn Roaming off.
On Samsung, the roaming toggle is sometimes under Connections → Mobile networks → Data roaming, and applies to the currently selected SIM.
Keeping calls on your home number
You usually want to stay reachable on your normal number while using eSIM data. That is fine: keep the home line enabled for calls and SMS, with its data roaming off. Incoming calls may cost you at roaming rates, but no data will flow.

Common mistakes
- Turning on roaming globally instead of per-line. Check both lines individually.
- Leaving Wi-Fi Assist / adaptive connectivity on, which can push data to the wrong line when Wi-Fi is weak.
- Forgetting the return trip. Turn your travel eSIM's line off when you get home so the phone stops trying to use it.
- Assuming "airplane mode off" is enough. It is not — roaming is a separate switch.
FAQ
Does data roaming on my eSIM cost extra? No. The plan you bought is the cost. The toggle just permits the connection.
Will my home carrier charge me if roaming is on but I never use data? Background app refresh counts as use. If the toggle is on and the phone attaches for data, charges can start. Turn it off.
Should I turn roaming on before or after landing? Either. Doing it before you fly means one less thing to remember at the gate — the eSIM will not connect until it finds a network in the destination anyway.
