Ecuador eSIM Guide 2026: Quito, the Andes and the Galápagos

Quito old town, Amazon lodges and the Galápagos — how much data you need in Ecuador, and why the islands are a special case.

Ecuador packs Andes, Amazon and the Galápagos into one small country — with three completely different connectivity realities.

Short answer: 5 GB covers a week on mainland Ecuador. Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca are well covered; the Amazon and high Andes are patchy. The Galápagos have limited, slow and expensive connectivity by design — expect to be mostly offline there.

eSIM vs local SIM

A travel eSIM rides Claro, Movistar or CNT. Local SIMs are cheap but need registration; the eSIM works from landing in Quito, which matters when arranging a transfer at altitude after a long flight.

How much data do you need?

  • Mainland week: 5 GB.
  • Adding Amazon and Galápagos: still 5 GB — you will be offline much of that time.
  • Remote work from Cuenca or Quito: 15 GB+.

Apps to download before you land

  • Cabify or Uber for Quito and Guayaquil.
  • Google Maps offline for the Quilotoa loop and Cotopaxi.
  • Google Translate with the Spanish pack.

Ecuador eSIM FAQ

Will my eSIM work in the Galápagos? Partially, slowly and unreliably. The islands' connectivity is limited and often satellite-backed — plan to be offline.

Is altitude a problem for phones? Not for signal, but Quito sits at 2,850m and cold plus altitude drains batteries.

How much data for two weeks? 5–8 GB for mainland-focused travel.

Is Ecuador good for remote work? Cuenca and Quito are popular, affordable and reasonably connected.

The bottom line

Ecuador is three trips in one, and only the mainland cities are reliably online. Install an Ecuador eSIM before you fly.

Galápagos reality: limited connectivity is part of the protection regime. Download everything before you board the flight.
