iPhones have supported eSIM since 2018, and in some regions Apple has dropped the physical SIM tray entirely. Here is the complete picture for travelers.
Short answer: every iPhone from the XS, XS Max and XR (2018) onward supports eSIM. US models of iPhone 14 and later are eSIM-only — no tray at all. iPhones sold in mainland China do not support eSIM.
Which iPhones support eSIM?
- iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and every model since
- iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 series (all variants)
- iPhone SE (2nd generation, 2020) and later
- Not supported: iPhone X and older; iPhone models sold in mainland China (they ship without eSIM)
To check your own phone in 20 seconds: Settings → General → About and look for an EID line, or dial *#06#. If there is an EID, you have eSIM.
The eSIM-only iPhones
Since the iPhone 14, US models have no SIM tray. If you bought your iPhone in the United States, an eSIM is not just an option — it is the only way to add a travel plan. Models sold elsewhere still have a tray plus eSIM support.
How to install an eSIM on iPhone
- Connect to Wi-Fi (the profile downloads over the internet).
- Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Service) → Add eSIM.
- Choose Use QR Code and scan the code from your email — or tap Enter Details Manually and paste the SM-DP+ address and activation code.
- Label the line something clear like "Travel".
- When you land: set it as your Cellular Data line and turn Data Roaming ON for that line.

Dual SIM on iPhone
iPhones run your physical SIM (or a second eSIM) alongside your travel eSIM. The setup that matters:
- Home line: stays on for calls and texts, Data Roaming OFF.
- Travel eSIM: set as Cellular Data, Data Roaming ON.
- Turn off "Allow Cellular Data Switching" so your data never falls back to the expensive home line.
