Running out of data abroad is avoidable if you glance at the number every couple of days. Here is exactly where to look.

Short answer: iPhone shows it under Settings → Cellular (reset the statistics when you land for an accurate count); Android shows a real per-SIM meter under Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → App data usage, where you can also set a warning and a hard limit. Your provider account shows the authoritative balance.

On iPhone

  1. Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data).
  2. Scroll to Cellular Data — you will see totals, and per-line figures under each plan.
  3. Crucially, iPhone's counter is cumulative since last reset, not per-plan. Scroll to the bottom and tap Reset Statistics the day you land, so the number reflects this trip only.

iPhone has no built-in hard cap. Use Low Data Mode (Settings → Cellular → your eSIM → Cellular Data Options) to reduce background usage.

On Android

  1. Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → select your travel eSIM.
  2. Tap App data usage to see the total and the top consumers.
  3. Tap the settings icon next to Data warning & limit to set a warning (e.g. 80%) and an automatic data limit that cuts mobile data at your threshold.

Android's per-SIM limit is genuinely useful — set it slightly below your plan size and you can never overrun.

The authoritative number

Phone counters measure what the device sent and received, which can drift slightly from what the network billed. For the real remaining balance, check your account dashboard — it shows what is actually left on the plan and lets you top up in a couple of taps.

Which apps are eating it?

Both platforms list usage per app. The usual suspects abroad:

  • Photo/cloud auto-backup — the number one hidden drain. Set it to Wi-Fi only.
  • Video autoplay in social feeds.
  • Streaming and hotspot sessions.

The bottom line

Reset the counter on landing, glance at it every couple of days, and set an Android limit if you have one. That turns "did I run out?" into a non-question. Browse plans for 190+ destinations.

Day-one habit: land, turn on the eSIM, reset your data statistics. Now every number you see is this trip.
