How to Unlock Your Phone for Travel (Free, and Before You Fly)
Carrier unlocking is usually free and takes days, not minutes. Here is the exact process for major carriers, the eligibility rules, and how to verify it worked.
If your phone is locked to a carrier, no travel eSIM will work on it. The good news: unlocking is normally free, and you can usually do it yourself online.
Short answer: contact the carrier that sold you the phone, confirm the device is paid off and the account in good standing, and request an unlock through their app or website. It typically takes anywhere from a few hours to a few business days — so start at least a week before you fly.
Step 1: Confirm you are actually locked

Step 2: Check eligibility
Carriers generally require:
- The device fully paid off (no outstanding instalments).
- The account active and in good standing (no unpaid bills).
- A minimum active period — often 60 days to 12 months depending on the carrier and country.
- The device not reported lost or stolen.
Step 3: Request the unlock
Most carriers now handle this in-app or via a web form:
