VoLTE and VoWiFi Explained: Why Your Calls May Not Work Abroad
3G networks are being switched off worldwide, and that breaks calling on some phones abroad. Here is what VoLTE and VoWiFi mean and how to check yours.
If your data works perfectly abroad but calls fail, the cause is usually one of these two acronyms — and the problem is spreading as older networks are retired.
Short answer: VoLTE carries voice calls over the 4G network; VoWiFi carries them over Wi-Fi. As operators shut down 2G and 3G, a phone that cannot do VoLTE loses the ability to make calls on those networks — even though data still works fine.
Why this is happening now
Voice calls traditionally ran on 2G/3G, with 4G used only for data. Operators worldwide are switching those legacy networks off to reuse the spectrum. Countries including the US, Australia, Singapore and much of Europe have completed or scheduled 3G shutdowns. On a 4G/5G-only network, voice must run over VoLTE — there is nothing else to fall back to.

How to check and enable it
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → your line → Voice & Data → ensure VoLTE is on. For Wi-Fi calling: Settings → Cellular → Wi-Fi Calling.
Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → your line → VoLTE / HD Calling and Wi-Fi calling toggles.
If the option is missing, your carrier may not have enabled VoLTE for your account or your phone may not be certified on that network — worth a call to them before you travel.
Does this affect my travel eSIM?
Not directly. Most travel eSIMs are data-only (why that is fine), so they have no voice service to break. VoLTE matters for your home line, which is the one you keep active for calls and 2FA codes.
