Many trips to Jordan run from Amman to the Dead Sea, whose shores are the lowest land on Earth, then south to Petra, Wadi Rum and the Red Sea at Aqaba. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. AirOva sells Jordan plans from $2.99, with a fixed amount of data or unlimited, all data only, with no call minutes, SMS or local phone number.
GB plans suit most trips, since maps, messaging and ride apps take little data, and run on Zain. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, and run on Orange. Each plan card shows its network and whether it is listed as 4G or 5G. UK travel advice calls Uber and Careem safer than yellow taxis.
Jordan has three mobile operators: Zain, founded as Fastlink in 1995; Orange, the former MobileCom; and Umniah. Our plans run on Zain and Orange, and Umniah is not on our plans. We have no coverage data for Wadi Rum's desert camps or the trails deep inside Petra, so plan those hours as offline.
Queen Alia International (AMM), Jordan's largest airport, is 30 km south of Amman, and King Hussein International (AQJ) serves Aqaba. After landing, switch on the eSIM line, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge. If you stay at least 3 nights, UK travel advice says you can buy the Jordan Pass online, which includes the visa fee and discounted entry to major sites; do it at home on Wi-Fi.
UK travel advice advises against all travel within 3 km of the border with Syria, warns that there may be landmines near borders and military sites, and says the regional situation remains unpredictable, with airspace closures possible at short notice. In the rainy season, from November to March, wadis can flash-flood, so check the forecast and stay away for at least a day after heavy rain.
Tip: Aqaba, Jordan's only coastal city, has Egypt, Israel and Saudi Arabia all within about 24 km, so check that your phone stays on a Jordanian network. If it shows a foreign one, pick the network named on your plan card by hand; more in our Jordan eSIM guide.
