Staying connected in Latvia

Most trips to Latvia start in Riga, and many add the beach resort of Jūrmala, Sigulda in the Gauja valley or the coast at Liepāja and Ventspils. Install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. Which Latvia plan to choose

GB plans suit most trips, since maps, messaging and ticket apps take little data. Unlimited plans give unlimited data with no data cap and no fair-usage limit, priced by the number of days, which suits remote work and long stays. The data + calls option adds call minutes to mobile data. GB and unlimited plans are data only, and no plan includes a local phone number.

LMT, Tele2 and 5G

Latvia has three mobile network operators: LMT, Tele2 and Bite. AirOva plans run on Tele2 and LMT; Bite is not on our plans. LMT said it had 100 5G base stations by December 2021, with 5G in every region of the country, and Tele2 planned a nationwide 5G rollout after the 700 MHz spectrum auction that month. Even so, plan cards and your phone decide what you see, so expect 4G in places and 5G where available.

Arriving at Riga Airport

Riga International Airport (RIX), about 10 km west of the city centre in Mārupe, is the largest airport in the Baltic states, and city bus 22 links it with central Riga. After landing, turn off airplane mode, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line; the plan is prepaid, so roaming adds no charge.

EU roaming in Latvia

Latvia is in the European Union, so SIMs from the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine roam there under Roam Like at Home. Riga lies between Tallinn and Vilnius, and many travellers see all three Baltic capitals by bus or car. A Latvia plan covers Latvia only unless its plan card says otherwise, while every Europe eSIM plan works in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia on one eSIM. Tip: install the eSIM over Wi-Fi a few days before you fly, and keep roaming off on your home SIM unless it is from the EU. Leave the home SIM in the phone for bank codes, and set the eSIM as your data line before you board.
