Online the moment you land at HKT

Most flights into Phuket land at Phuket International Airport (HKT) in the north of the island, 40–60 minutes by road from Patong, Kata and Karon. The first thing you need after touchdown is data: to book a Grab or Bolt, message your hotel and check the route. With an airova eSIM there is no SIM counter, no queue and no passport registration at arrivals — the eSIM is already on your phone.

  1. At home, before the flight: buy a Thailand plan below and scan the QR code on Wi-Fi. The plan does not start until it first connects in Thailand.
  2. After landing: switch the airova line on, set it as your mobile-data line and turn on data roaming for it. Leave data roaming off on your home SIM so it cannot run up charges.
  3. On the jet bridge: the eSIM attaches to the True–dtac network, usually within a minute — you are online before passport control.

Which network, and how good is it on Phuket?

The airova Thailand eSIM runs on True–dtac, the merged network of TrueMove H and dtac and one of Thailand’s two largest. Most plans connect on 5G where it is available — Phuket Town, Patong and the busy west-coast beaches — and fall back to 4G elsewhere. Signal is strong along the main roads and in Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao, Rawai and Chalong. It can weaken in secluded coves, on hilltop viewpoints and in the middle of boat crossings.

Day trips: Phi Phi, Phang Nga and Krabi

Phi Phi, the Phang Nga Bay islands and Krabi are covered by the same national networks, so the eSIM keeps working on the piers and beaches. Expect gaps on the open sea between islands: download offline Google Maps for the area and save your booking confirmations before you board.

How much data for Phuket?

A week of beach holiday with maps, Grab, messaging and photo sharing usually fits in 3–5 GB. Two weeks, video calls home or lots of Reels and stories call for 10 GB or more. If you work remotely from a villa or café, choose a large or daily plan. Run out mid-trip? Top up the same eSIM from your account — no new QR code. Our guide to how much data you need has the details, and the Thailand eSIM page covers the rest of the country.

Thailand eSIM FAQ

Will the eSIM work as soon as I land at Phuket airport (HKT)?
Yes, if you install it before the flight. After landing, switch the eSIM line on and enable data roaming for it — it connects to the True–dtac network, usually within a minute, while you are still on the jet bridge. Check compatibility →
Which mobile network does the eSIM use on Phuket?
True–dtac — the merged network of TrueMove H and dtac. Most plans connect on 5G where available (Phuket Town, Patong, the main west-coast beaches) and use 4G elsewhere. Install guide →
Does it work on Phi Phi, in Phang Nga Bay and on boat trips?
On the islands, piers and beaches — yes, they are covered by the same national networks. On the open sea between islands the signal can drop, so download offline maps before you board.
How much data do I need for a week in Phuket?
Usually 3–5 GB for maps, Grab, messaging and photos. Take 10 GB or more for two weeks, frequent video calls or remote work. You can top up the same eSIM at any time.
Is an eSIM better than buying a SIM card at Phuket airport?
It saves the queue at the arrivals SIM counter and the passport registration, and you are online before you reach it. You keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and SMS codes.
Can I keep my home number for WhatsApp and bank SMS?
Yes. Your home SIM stays active for calls and SMS; the eSIM is used only for data. Keep data roaming off on the home SIM to avoid charges.
