Two-Factor Codes Abroad: Why Your Bank SMS Still Needs Your Home SIM

A data-only eSIM cannot receive your bank's SMS codes. Here is how to keep two-factor authentication working while you travel — and what to switch before you go.

This is the practical detail that catches out more travelers than any coverage question: your bank texts a code to your home number, and a data-only travel eSIM does not have one.

Short answer: keep your home SIM active (dual SIM) so SMS codes still arrive, and move critical accounts to an authenticator app before you travel so you are not dependent on SMS at all.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Banks, airlines, email providers and payment apps increasingly require a second factor. Abroad, the failure mode is nasty: you cannot log in to your bank, cannot approve a card payment, and cannot reset the password because the reset also texts your number.

The three ways codes reach you

MethodWorks abroad?Notes
SMS to home numberYes, if the home SIM is activeNeeds voice/SMS roaming, not data
Authenticator app (TOTP)Yes, fully offlineBest option — no network needed at all
Push approval in the bank appYes, over any dataWorks over your eSIM

The setup that works

  1. Keep your home SIM in the phone and switched on. SMS and voice roaming is usually free to receive — it is data roaming that costs money. Turn the home line's data roaming off, leave the line on. (Dual SIM guide.)
  2. Let the travel eSIM carry data, with roaming on for that line only.
  3. Before you fly, move critical accounts to an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password, etc.). TOTP codes are generated offline and keep working even with no signal at all.
  4. Save your recovery codes somewhere that is not your phone.

Enable Wi-Fi calling as a backstop

With Wi-Fi calling on, your home number can receive calls and often texts over any internet connection — useful if you are somewhere your home carrier has no roaming partner. See eSIM vs Wi-Fi calling.

Tell your bank you are travelling

Many banks still flag foreign logins and card use. A quick travel notice in the app prevents a frozen card in a supermarket queue. More in using banking apps abroad.

What if you lose the phone entirely?

Then SMS-only 2FA becomes a serious problem — which is the strongest argument for authenticator apps and stored recovery codes. See lost phone abroad.

The bottom line

The eSIM handles your data; your home SIM handles your codes. Set up an authenticator app before you fly and you are covered either way. Browse plans for 190+ destinations.

The rule: home line ON (data roaming off) for codes, eSIM ON for data. Do not remove your home SIM to make room.
