How Many eSIMs Can a Phone Hold? Stored vs Active, Explained
Modern phones store 8–20 eSIM profiles but can only use one or two at a time. Here is the difference, and what it means when you travel often.
There are two different numbers here, and mixing them up is why people worry about "running out of space" for eSIMs.
Short answer: most modern phones can store 8–20 eSIM profiles but only keep one or two active at the same time. Recent iPhones store 8+ and can run two lines simultaneously; recent Pixels and Galaxys are similar. Storing an inactive eSIM costs you nothing.
Stored vs active
- Stored profiles: eSIMs sitting in your phone's secure element, switched off. iPhones hold at least eight; many Android phones hold a similar number. They use no battery and no data.
- Active lines: profiles currently connected to a network. This is the smaller number — typically two lines at once (for example, your home SIM plus one travel eSIM, or two eSIMs on eSIM-only iPhones).
So you can carry last year's Japan eSIM, this year's Thailand eSIM and your home line all on one phone — just not all switched on together.
What this means for frequent travelers
- Keep old profiles if they still have validity; toggle them on when you return to that country.
- Delete truly dead ones to keep your settings list readable — but remember a deleted single-use QR usually cannot be reinstalled (details).
- Switching between plans is just a toggle in settings, not a reinstall.
Can you use two travel eSIMs at once?
On most phones, yes — if both are eSIMs and your phone supports dual eSIM (recent iPhones, Pixel 7+, recent Galaxy). Only one can be your data line at a time, though. In practice that is useful for a border-crossing trip: two country plans installed, toggle as you cross.
Where to see your profiles
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular — every installed line is listed, active or not.
- Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs (or SIM manager on Samsung).
