Online the moment you land in Seoul

Most international flights into Seoul land at Incheon International Airport (ICN), on an island west of the city; Gimpo (GMP) is closer in and handles some regional routes. The first thing you need after touchdown is data: to check the AREX train or airport bus, open your map app and message your hotel. With an airova eSIM there is no SIM or router counter and no queue at arrivals — the eSIM is already on your phone.

  1. At home, before the flight: buy a South Korea plan below and scan the QR code on Wi-Fi. The plan does not start until it first connects in South Korea.
  2. After landing: switch the airova line on, set it as your mobile-data line and turn on data roaming for it. Leave data roaming off on your home SIM so it cannot run up charges.
  3. At the gate: the eSIM attaches to a local network, usually within a minute — you are online before passport control.

Which network, and how does it work in Seoul?

The airova South Korea eSIM connects to SK Telecom and LG U+, two of the country’s national operators, and uses 5G where it is available and 4G elsewhere. Coverage is solid across central Seoul — Myeongdong, Insadong, Hongdae, Itaewon, Gangnam — and in the subway, as well as along the main intercity routes. Signal can weaken in some mountain trails and remote valleys.

Getting around: AREX, subway, T-money and maps

The AREX train runs from Incheon and Gimpo into Seoul Station, and the subway covers almost the whole city. Buy a T-money card at a convenience store or station machine and use it on the subway, buses and many taxis. Google Maps has limited walking and driving directions in Korea, so locals use Naver Map or KakaoMap — install one before you fly. For taxis, KakaoTaxi shows the route and lets you book without explaining the address.

Day trips: the DMZ and Busan

DMZ tours leave from central Seoul with a guide; follow their instructions in the border area, where some spots have limited access. Busan is a popular trip by KTX from Seoul Station, and the same plan works there too — on the train, at Haeundae and around the port. Save tickets and offline maps before you go.

How much data for Seoul?

A week in the city with maps, taxis, messaging and photo sharing usually fits in 3–5 GB. Two weeks, video calls home or lots of Reels and stories call for 10 GB or more. Run out mid-trip? Top up the same eSIM from your account — no new QR code. See how much data you need and the South Korea eSIM page for the rest of the country.

South Korea eSIM FAQ

Will the eSIM work as soon as I land at Incheon (ICN) or Gimpo (GMP)?
Yes, if you install it before the flight. After landing, switch the eSIM line on and enable data roaming for it — it connects to a local network, usually within a minute, before you reach passport control. Check compatibility →
Which mobile networks does the eSIM use in Seoul?
SK Telecom and LG U+. The eSIM uses 5G where it is available and 4G elsewhere. Install guide →
Does Google Maps work in Korea?
Google Maps has limited walking and driving directions in Korea, so locals use Naver Map or KakaoMap. Install one of them before you fly; both need mobile data for live routes.
Does it work on the KTX to Busan and on DMZ tours?
Busan and the main KTX routes are covered by the same national networks, and the plan works across the country. On DMZ tours follow your guide’s instructions in the border area.
How much data do I need for a week in Seoul?
Usually 3–5 GB for maps, taxis, messaging and photos. Take 10 GB or more for two weeks, frequent video calls or remote work. You can top up the same eSIM at any time.
Can I keep my home number for WhatsApp and bank SMS?
Yes. Your home SIM stays active for calls and SMS; the eSIM is used only for data. Keep data roaming off on the home SIM to avoid charges.
