Caucasus eSIM Guide: Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan on One Trip
Three countries, three separate networks and one closed border. Here is how to plan connectivity across a Caucasus route without buying the wrong plan or getting stuck at a crossing.
The Caucasus is three small countries packed with mountains, monasteries and wine, and it is one of the more confusing regions to plan connectivity for — because the obvious route does not exist.
The border reality first
The Armenia–Azerbaijan border is not open to travellers. Routes between the two go through Georgia, which is why Tbilisi ends up as the hub of almost every Caucasus itinerary.
That matters for your data plan, because it means a typical route is Georgia → Armenia → Georgia → Azerbaijan, crossing into Georgia repeatedly. A regional plan covering all three earns its keep here more than in most places.
One more thing worth knowing: entering Azerbaijan can be complicated by evidence of travel to Nagorno-Karabakh. Check current entry rules before you plan the route.
Coverage by country
Georgia — the best of the three for travellers. Magti, Silknet and Cellfie cover Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi and the main roads well. The mountain regions (Svaneti, Tusheti, Kazbegi) have town coverage and little else. The road to Tusheti is one of the most remote drives in Europe.
Armenia — Team (formerly VivaCell), Ucom and Team cover Yerevan and the main highways. Monasteries in the canyons (Tatev, Noravank, Geghard) often sit in dead spots. The road south to Iran through Syunik is thin.

Because the route re-enters Georgia between the other two, three country plans mean buying Georgian data twice or juggling activation windows. That is the practical argument for a regional plan here.

Practical notes
- Marshrutkas (minibuses) are the regional transport backbone and run on informal schedules; drivers and guesthouses coordinate by phone.
- Download offline maps for all three countries before you start. Svaneti and Tusheti in particular.
- Wine country in Kakheti is easy driving with good coverage.
- Winter closes mountain roads — the Tusheti road is summer-only, and Svaneti can be cut off.
- Cash in the mountains; cards in the cities.

Can I cross directly from Armenia to Azerbaijan? No. Route via Georgia.
Does a "Europe" plan cover these countries? Sometimes Georgia, less often Armenia and Azerbaijan. Check the list by name.
Will it work in Svaneti and Tusheti? In Mestia yes; in the high villages and on the passes, expect nothing.
Is local data cheap? In Georgia yes, notably. For a month-long stay a local SIM is worth it; for a multi-country trip the eSIM is simpler.
