Does an eSIM Work Without Wi-Fi? Yes — With One Important Exception
Once installed, an eSIM works on mobile data with no Wi-Fi needed. But installing one does require internet. Here is exactly when you need Wi-Fi and when you do not.
This question trips up almost every first-time eSIM buyer, and the answer has two halves.
Short answer: using an eSIM needs no Wi-Fi — it is mobile data, exactly like a physical SIM. But installing one does need an internet connection, because your phone downloads the plan profile. So install at home on Wi-Fi, then use it anywhere.
Using an eSIM: no Wi-Fi required
Once the profile is on your phone, the eSIM connects to local mobile networks on its own. You get data on the street, on a bus, in the mountains — anywhere there is signal. It is a SIM; it just arrived as software instead of plastic.
Installing an eSIM: internet required

You can install over:
- Wi-Fi (recommended — do it at home before you fly), or
- another working mobile data connection on the same phone.
What if you land abroad with no eSIM installed?
You are not stuck, but it is avoidable stress. Options:
- Airport Wi-Fi — usually free, sometimes requires an SMS code you cannot receive. Workable but fiddly.
- Your home SIM's roaming, briefly, to download the profile — this may cost you a day of roaming.
- A café or hotel Wi-Fi once you get there.
All of which is why every provider says the same thing: install before you fly.
Will it work in airplane mode?
No — airplane mode disables the radios. But you can turn Wi-Fi back on inside airplane mode to install an eSIM mid-flight if the plane has Wi-Fi.
Does installing early waste data?
