Short answer: an eSIM is a phone plan you download instead of a card you insert. If your phone is from about 2019 or newer, you can buy one online, tap a few times to install it at home, and have working internet the moment you land — usually far cheaper than what your phone company charges abroad.
What is an eSIM, plainly?
Your phone has a small chip inside it that can hold a phone plan. An eSIM is simply a plan downloaded onto that chip. Nothing to insert, nothing to lose, nothing to swap. Your existing SIM card stays exactly where it is.
Will it work on my phone?
Two things must be true:
- Your phone is from roughly 2019 or later (iPhone XS or newer, most Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer).
- Your phone is not locked to one phone company. If you own it outright, it usually is not.
How to check in 20 seconds: open the phone keypad and dial *#06#. If you see a long number labelled EID, your phone can use an eSIM. If not, it cannot.
The simple checklist
Do this at home, on your home Wi-Fi, a day or two before you fly:
- Buy a plan for the country you are visiting. Pick a small one — 5 GB is plenty for most people.
- Open the email you receive. It has a square QR code.
- On your phone: Settings → Cellular (or Mobile) → Add eSIM → Use QR Code, then point the camera at the code. It is easiest to open the email on a computer and scan the screen.
- Give it a name like "Travel" when asked.
- Leave it there. Nothing starts yet.
When you land:
- In the same Settings screen, choose the "Travel" plan and turn on the switch that says Data Roaming for it.
That is all. You now have internet.
Common worries, answered
"Will I lose my phone number?" No. Your normal number stays active for calls and texts, including codes from your bank. More detail.

"Will I get a huge bill?" No. You pay once, in advance. When the data runs out it simply stops — there is no extra charge.

Ask for help before you fly, not after
If a family member can spend five minutes with you before the trip, that is the ideal time. Everything is easier on home Wi-Fi with no time pressure.
